    Just do it

Just do it means growing by taking action. It's a slogan I struggled to grasp. Planning everything was my way. But recently, I decided to act. And surprisingly, it's going well. I feared the unknown, but hurdles became chances to learn. It's about progress through action.

    Un-sabotaging my life

SabotageĀ Ā /ˈsƦb.ə.tɑːʒ/ to intentionally prevent the success of a plan or action I know it sounds dramatic, but sometimes dramatics are needed for one’s eyes to be opened to reality. This year more than ever before, I’ve had people tell me things like ā€œYou’ve got so much in you.ā€, ā€œThere’s so much that you can do, do something!ā€, ā€œYou can do more than you’re doing now.ā€, etc, etc. You get the drift? So do I. That’s why I think it’s time to take action and undo some of the damage I’ve done in my own life. (Again, pretty dramatic, but it’s still true.) It is easier said than done. Telling someone…

    ‘Late’ bloomer, but still blooming

ā€œDo you have kids?ā€ my pedicurist asked. ā€œNo,ā€ I answered, already knowing where this conversation was heading. ā€œOh, but you’re married, right?ā€ she continued. I gave her a quick ā€œnopeā€, hoping that it would end there. It didn’t. ā€œHow old are you?ā€ ā€œ30,ā€ I replied. ā€œOh,ā€ she said with a pitying face and went back to minding my feet instead of my business.Ā  This conversation is one of many similar conversations I’ve had with people not knowing what to say when they find out I’m unmarried, without kids, living at home, etc. at the big age of 30. I don’t blame them, because according to societal norms, I’m probably not…

    Enhancing my work experience

Some of you might remember that in November 2021 I started working again after a 10-month break.Ā Working inĀ aĀ new environment gave me the chance to experience workĀ in a different way than I had before, so much so that IĀ nowĀ even enjoyĀ working. (Am I allowedĀ to say this?)Ā  Lots of lessons were learned in the past year and a half, but three of these significantly enhancedĀ the way I experience work.Ā They might help you too, so here they are: 1.Ā EmbraceĀ mistakes – you’ll get it right eventually I started workingĀ in communications, a field I had zero experience in.Ā In fact, at my old job my managersĀ evenĀ kept saying I needed to work on my communication skills.Ā I decided to follow their…

Coulda, shoulda, woulda … but didn’t

It’s been a full year since I posted anything on here and I sure am ashamed. The last time I posted a blog, I mentioned that I was going to be consistent, yet I failed miserably. IĀ could’veĀ written more blogs if I did my best. IĀ would’veĀ written more blogs if I took the time for it. IĀ should’veĀ written more blogs if I really wanted to be consistent. However, IĀ didn’t write more blogs.Ā  This coulda-woulda-shouda-didn’t situation has happened several times over the last few years and it’s a situation that I no longer wish to be in. It’s actually a hindrance to the amazing life I’m trying to live. And it wasn’t until a…

Faith fatigue: when faith becomes routine

I’ve been dreading to write about my faith for a while now. Perhaps I was scared that typing it out would make it all so real. I’m tired of my faith. Not in the sense of wanting to denounce it, but rather feeling like there isn’t much more to learn and a lot of things seem repetitive. I started my ā€œseriousā€ Christian journey in 2011. Life was in shambles (almost didn’t pass the first year of university) and I knew that faith would give me stability. One day I prayed and asked God for something specific. Then one Sunday, not too long after, a guest preacher came to my church…

    New job, new mindset

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a blog and that’s because I started working again. Can you believe it? Yes, I’m back at the office, but things are very much different now. I’m not working fulltime and I’m not in the corporate world. This new job is parttime and more on the social spectrum of things.  On the 1stĀ of November 2021, I started working as a communications advisor for an aid organization. It all started when I decided I wanted to work again. Initially I wanted to do volunteering work because I like the causes these organizations stand for. Then, praise be to God, I found out that some…

How people pleasing got me everywhere and nowhere

Hi, my name is Ruth and I’m a recovering people pleaser. Whew, typing that makes me proud. Not because I was a serial people pleaser, but because I’ve acknowledged it and I’m steadily working on not going back to that place.  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a people pleaser is defined as ā€œa person who has an emotional need to please others often at the expense of his or her own needs or desiresā€. And this definition is exactly what I experienced. I don’t know when it started, but I think I know why I became a people pleaser. See, I’m a lover of peace. I want to be surrounded by peace at all…
